The senseless August 23, 1989 murder of 16-year-old Yusuf (Yusef) Hawkins at the hands of an angry racist mob changed the emotional, political, and social landscape of Brooklyn (and, to a great degree, New York City) forever. It’s been 29 years since his tragic and unnecessary murder but the impact is still felt in polarized neighborhoods and inter-racial relations between Brooklyn residents and the police officers who oversee them.
